Okuma reels started as a spinoff company in 1987
Okuma originally started as an OEM manufacturer but with fishing
enthusiasts as owners, the company soon branched out into fishing tackle.
It hasn’t looked back and now is now well known for its smooth and
powerful reels. The materials and the manufacturing are of the highest
possible standards. Okuma reels are rigorously tested before they go on
the market, so customers are assured that the products will withstand the
rugged use anglers put them through.
Okuma reels are suited for any freshwater or saltwater fishing offering
exquisite quality and precision. Okuma fly reels are corrosion resistant
(thanks to a high-end anodized coating) and are built to take a beating.
Most of them are made from black lightweight graphite with a stainless
steel shaft. They require a minimum amount of maintenance and will last
for many years.
Okuma reels are based on a large arbor designed for improved retrieval
rate. Depending on the model of course, they are quite capable of carrying
a 9 weight line and 110 yards of 200 pound mono backing. The body of the
reel is drilled to reduce weight, but the holes are also really effective
at letting water out. There is an oversize drag system on the body of the
reel and is activated by turning the wheel. Of course, the rim of the
spool is exposed to let the you add extra pressure manually if needed.
A small button located in the center releases the spool, which rotates
smoothly on stainless steel bearings. The spool is counterbalanced and can
be switched to either right or left hand retrieval.
The latest line of Okuma reels feature the patented bait feeder system and
is quickly making Okuma the reel that everyone wants to have. These high
performance reels are designed for both inshore and offshore use. The
gears are machine cut stainless steel and the main shaft is oversized and
stainless steel as well. The spool is made of machined aluminum and fitted
with a drag seal to protect the oil soaked felt from the elements of the
weather and the water. Some of the Okuma models, such as the Coronado,
feature an anti-reverse system which can be a real god-send.
Whether you are a seasoned angler or a novice, an Okuma reel will do you
proud and give you good, hassle free fishing for years to come.
